Each summer the Croatian coast fills with visitors, and hotel kitchens from Istria to Dubrovnik serve breakfast and dinner buffets to full houses. To do that they need dishwashers, kitchen helpers, assistant cooks and cooks. Much of the hiring is for the season, which runs roughly from April to October.
Croatia has a small population, and many local hospitality workers have moved to other European countries. Hotel companies now fill a large share of kitchen posts with workers from Asia and from neighbouring states. The number of work permits issued to foreign workers has grown strongly in recent years.
Croatia uses the euro. The national minimum wage for 2026 is €1,050 gross a month, and that is the floor for a full-time kitchen helper. Cooks earn more. Coastal hotels very often provide a bed in staff housing and meals, which matters as much as the wage.
We explain below the usual pay, tasks, entry conditions, documents and the stay and work permit that non-EU workers need. This page is for information. We are not a hotel, an agency or a government office, and we cannot offer anyone a position.

- Use official and major portals Look at the Croatian Employment Service job exchange, the EURES portal and the biggest national job site. Search “pomoćni kuhar”, “perač posuđa” or “kitchen helper”.
- Apply to hotel companies The large resort groups publish seasonal vacancies on their own career pages and often state whether a room and meals are included.
- Interview and contract After a video interview you receive a contract. Check the gross and net wage, hours, season dates, housing terms and who pays for travel.

- Arrival formalities Register your address, give biometrics for the residence card, obtain your tax number and complete the sanitary check before handling food.
🧭 Life and Work in a Croatian Hotel Kitchen
🌞 The Rhythm of the Season
April and May are for opening and training. July and August are the peak, when the kitchen serves full buffets twice a day and rest is short. September slows down, and most coastal hotels close in October. Plan for a few intense months, not a steady year.
⏰ Hours in High Season
The standard week is 40 hours. In tourism, employers may spread hours unevenly, so peak weeks are longer and quieter weeks shorter, within legal limits. Overtime must be recorded and paid. Ask how hours are tracked and when days off are given in July and August.
🛏️ Staff Housing
Resort companies house seasonal workers in staff buildings or rented flats, usually two to four to a room. Recent rules set minimum standards for housing provided to foreign workers and limit what can be charged. Ask to see the terms before you travel.
🍽️ Buffet Kitchens
Most resort hotels sell half board, so the kitchen is built around large breakfast and dinner buffets. Helpers spend much of the day on prep, refilling and washing up. It is repetitive, but it teaches speed and order, which are the base of any kitchen career.
🗣️ Languages in the Kitchen
Kitchen teams are mixed, and English is widely used with foreign staff. Chefs give many orders in Croatian, so learn the words for common foods, tools and “hot”, “behind” and “careful”. Guests are often German, Austrian, Italian or Slovenian.
💶 Costs and Saving
Prices in tourist towns are high in summer, and private rent on the coast is hard to find. With a room and meals from the employer, a seasonal worker can save a fair part of net pay. Without them, the minimum wage leaves little.
🔁 Coming Back Next Year
Hotels like to rehire people they know. Workers who finish the season with a good report are often invited back, sometimes in a higher position. Permits can be extended or issued again under the rules in force, and returning staff usually face fewer delays.
❓ Frequently Asked Questions

✍️ Conclusion
A season in a Croatian hotel kitchen is short, busy and a realistic first step into European hospitality. The pay is close to the minimum wage for helpers, so housing and meals decide how much you keep. Apply early, check the hotel and let the employer handle the permit through official channels.
